I've had the sushi/sashimi bento and the spicy chirashi-don, both were amazing. I went with a former English student of mine, now on an exchange out here from Japan, and she ate the unagi-don with more gusto than I have ever seen someone consume a dish. I'm not sure what higher compliment I can pay.

The HMCS Saskatchewan a 366-foot navy destroyer was sunk off the shores of Nanaimo to create an artificial diving reef. The Saskatchewan was joined on the ocean floor in by the HMCS Cape Breton, a retired Canadian Supply Ship, now recognized as the World's Largest Artificial Upright Reef. In February of 2005, the Nanaimo Dive Association sank a third vessel, the RivTow Lion, a retired deep sea rescue tug. The Rivtow rests at a manageable depth of about 50 feet in Departure Bay, making it a great dive for beginners seeking some experience before plunging down deeper to the Cape Breton or Saskatchewan.

Winchelsea View Golf Course located in Lantzville located just north of Naniamo is an executive length par 64 golf course. Total yardage from the blue tournament markers is 4322 yards.

Hi birders, The Tuesday bird walk went to the Englishman River Estuary on the Plummer Road side. The morning was cloudy with a strong biting wind. At the start of the walk we saw a Rufous Hummingbird perched on the top of a short bush on one side of the trail. On the other side of the trail an Anna's Hummingbird was perched on top of a short bush. Just off the Englishman River, we spotted a Northern Shoveler and a Gadwall roosting in among a flock of Mallards, American Wigeon and Northern Pintail. A large flock of Green-winged Teal were feeding on the mud flats. Three Marbled Murrelets flew by just above the water heading down the Strait of Georgia and a Pigeon Guillemot was riding the waves offshore. Large numbers of Brant Geese, Greater Scaup, Harlequin Ducks, Surf Scoters, White-winged Scoters, Long-tailed Ducks, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye and Red-breasted Mergansers were moving down the Strait throughout the morning, giving us great views. With conservation in mind, William Morrell, a local contractor, donated this land in 1973 for the public's enjoyment. Last logged in the twenties, Morrell Nature Sanctuary is a privately owned nature reserve leased and managed by Morrell Sanctuary Society for Environmental Education, a not-for-profit organization managed by volunteers who maintain the park and organize many programs for school children and the general public and are supported solely by donations, membership fees and, in the past, a gaming grant from the BC Provincial Government. If you are not already a member, please consider joining and helping us to support this lovely property.

Westwood is Nanaimo's most popular lake for swimming, running and walking. The landscape here creates an illusion of being farther from the city, even though Westwood Lake is only 4 km west of downtown (a 7-8 minute drive).

The well-maintained trail around the lake is all forest, beach, and boardwalk – it's a serene place. And if you come on a clear day, you'll get a great close-up of the mountain, and even some views of the ocean.

Pipers Lagoon Park is a great ocean side park . The lagoon itself is the size of three football fields. You park at one end and walk along a narrow, straight dyke between the lagoon and the restless surf. The waves from the open water have created a marvelous pebbly beach .  You will view  Arbutus trees and Garry Oak, eagles, driftwood and views of the Strait. It's a great spot for an afternoon picnic; you can check out the birds hanging around the lagoon, take a short hike through the gnarly Garry oak forest, sit on a beached log and watch the cruise ships slip by or give the climbing wall your best shot. Then head to Shack Island to see storied old fishermen's sheds that are kept as unserviced cottages..

The park's named for a gravel bar connecting the park to a rocky "head" of igneous rock out in the water. Sea lions and sometimes even orcas pass by here, and from the tops of small cliffs , you can look down and see otters surfacing in the shallows.
A developed trail runs through most of the park, with boardwalks and lookouts.

Newcastle Island is the perfect day trip within Nanaimo.  The ferry terminal, located at Swy-A-Lana Lagoon Park 15 minutes from the B&B.   Newcastle Island was acquired from the CP Railway by the city in 1955, then passed on to the Province in 1961, at which point it was made into a park. It is quite large, especially considering its proximity to downtown Nanaimo; a walk around the circumference covers more than 7.5 kilometers. The hiking is easy.  The island is home to albino raccoons , deer, bald eagles, rabbits, some kind of weasel, mallards, geese, and a host of other kinds of wildlife. You can view the old sandstone quarry on your walk on the west side of the Island.

WestJet will launch daily, non-stop service between Nanaimo and Calgary starting June 24, the airline announced Monday at a special event at Nanaimo Airport. Nanaimo is one of the first two cities to receive the new direct service that will be operated by WestJet Encore's fleet of Bombardier Q400 NextGen aircraft, capable of carrying 78 passengers at a time. There will be one round-trip a day, with a flight leaving Calgary at 11 a.m. and arriving in Nanaimo at 11:43 a.m., followed by a departure from Nanaimo at 12:30 p.m. with a scheduled arrival in Calgary at 2:57 p.m. Total fare from Calgary to Nanaimo, including all extra charges and taxes, will come to $140.83, while a ticket from Nanaimo to Calgary will cost $127.81.
